Having already made a behind-the-scenes documentary about Gilliam's 1995 film "12 Monkeys," Fulton and Pepe got unlimited access to "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote," Gilliam's dream project based on the Cervantes novel, which he'd worked on for a decade Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian Some material may not be suitable for children It would have been a visually lavish production, as you would imagine from Gilliam, who previously directed "Time Bandits" and created the signature cutout animation sequences for Monty Python's Flying Circus We probably could have drawn that conclusion for ourselves Since we know the movie never even came close to completion, there's a looming feeling of dread as each disastrous day of shooting goes by â€â€? not that there were many of them Running time: 89 minutes Here, co-directors Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe had similar aspirations R â€â€? Restricted The few scenes Gilliam did manage to capture on celluloid are beautiful, wondrous and strange, and offer a melancholy glimpse of what could have been But "La Mancha" hits us over the head with the parallel between Quixote and Gilliam But when Wilco's record label dropped them, Jones wound up with a very different â€â€? and much more compelling â€â€? story At the Movies: 'Lost in La Mancha' Feb 5, 4:56 PM EST "Lost in La Mancha" â€â€? a documentary about Terry Gilliam's failed attempt to adapt "Don Quixote" â€â€? proves that you can have all the talent and vision in the world, and it doesn't matter: A few minor mishaps can snowball into major catastrophes, and a decade of work can disappear in a few days We are reminded repeatedly that, like Quixote, Gilliam tilts at his own cinematic windmills Gilliam was forced to shut down production after just six days Gilliam manages to let out a few of his trademark giddy cackles and tries to move on once things dry up, but his enthusiasm merely makes him look pathetic â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences He captured them recording their album "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," with the intention of doing a behind-the-scenes film about a group on the verge of making it big NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted On its surface, "La Mancha" resembles last summer's "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," in which photographer Sam Jones set out to make a documentary about the band Wilco " "Lost in La Mancha," an IFC Films release, is rated R for language Three stars out of four Rochefort thinks something is wrong with his prostate and is in excruciating pain every time he mounts a horse The film was to star veteran French actor Jean Rochefort ("The Hairdresser's Husband," "Ridicule") as Don Quixote, and Johnny Depp as a man who travels back in time and serves as his Sancho Panza ) The Quixotic metaphor is fitting, though, even years later: Gilliam is still trying to buy back the script for "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (Orson Welles, by the way, also tried to make a Don Quixote movie, and never finished after decades of work Some material may be inappropriate for young children The insurance company won't cover the storm damage, calling it an act of God Once shooting begins, there's a problem with the soundstage: It's not soundproof Rochefort â€â€? then 70 years old â€â€? has a herniated disk, and must leave the set indefinitely "It's got a lot of potential for chaos here," Gilliam says ominously as he tries to reach Depp by phone PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 It's as fascinating as it is disheartening, and it makes you wonder how any movie ever gets made at all Then comes Day Two, and with it, a massive storm and flash flooding that carries away much of the equipment The film had a budget of $32 million, all from European investors; while that was huge by European standards, it was half of what Gilliam needed to make the film he'd envisioned Trouble begins during pre-production in Madrid in August 2000, with none of the actors arriving on set as the start of shooting approaches â€â€? not even Rochefort, who'd spent seven months learning English for the role All ages admitted And that's the end of that
