Australian country music singer Slim Dusty, whose cowboy songs captured the laid-back culture of the Outback, has died at age 76, his record company said Friday
Australian Prime Minister John Howard said Dusty had created a distinctive Australian brand of country music
Dusty had his left kidney removed after a cancerous tumor was detected in November 2001, he received continuous treatment
At age 10 he wrote his first song, "The Way The Cowboy Dies," and a year later renamed himself Slim Dusty
"He was so intrinsically and unapologetically Australian," music historian Glenn A He performed dozens of concerts across the nation each year, often playing with his family
Dusty is survived by his wife Joy McKean, daughter Anne Kirkpatrick and son David Kirkpatrick
