The dance, which had its New York premiere Tuesday night at the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival, was performed beautifully by the seven-member company, with the supple Kristen Hollinsworth lending her Sleeping Beauty a languid, otherworldly air
In the end, all seven dancers roll slowly back and forth, forming a sort of conveyor belt across the front of the stage
From this relatively subdued start spring a series of disjointed, frenetic scenes at odds with the focused, structured choreography of "Sleeping Beauty Snippets of humor come and go, as when DeChiazza desperately stuffs an overactive, yelping van Noort between the legs of his chair Giving chase, the dancers weave in and out of Douglas Stein's terrific set, seven large factory windows that hang from the fly space to form an open-faced rectangle David Lang's and Annie Gosfield's industrial and gentle compositions, integrated by sound designer Jane Shaw, and Kasia Walicka Maimone's dull-hued, motley costumes, complete the fractured feel generated by Hollinsworth's simultaneous yearning for, and resistance to, integration Even when in their arms she frustrates, allowing a kiss only to turn her face away or twist a long leg in between their torsos
