Synopsis: A Lie of the Mind is Sam Shepard's seventh full-length play and winner of the New York Drama Critics Award for Best Play of the Year in the 1985-1986 season. It tells the story of two families torn apart by tragedy. Told in three acts set in the gritty American West, the story alternates between two families after a severe incident of spousal abuse leaves all their lives altered until the final collision at an isolated cabin. The two families, one composed of Baylor, Meg, Beth and Mike, the other composed of Lorraine, Sally, Frank and Jake are connected by the marriage of Jake and Beth whose beating and subsequent hospitalization at the hands of Jake initiates the beginning of the play. Exploring family dysfunction and the nature of love, the play follows Jake as he searches for meaning after Beth, and her family, as they struggle with Beth's brain damage.

Cadillac and Moby Grape, not to mention the region's three "Louie Louie" bands: the Tacoma-based Wailers, and Paul Revere & the Raiders and the Kingsmen, both based in Portland "It's the father of three-chord rock, or the grandfather," said Bob Jones, 49, a Fred Meyer grocer from Tacoma On stage were dozens of professional musicians, including members of such bands as Heart, Jr The Kingsmen's often unintelligible recording led to some unsavory interpretations, and the song was banned in one state and investigated by the FBI Then â€â€? following the lead of front man Paul Revere in his trademark Revolutionary War-style red coat and hat â€â€? the guitarists launched into the legendary three-chord intro The event was a fund raiser for a music and mentoring program named for Wailers guitarist Richard Dangel, who died of heart failure in December at 60 Aug 26, 8:53 AM EST The goal was 1,000 guitars simultaneously banging out "Louie, Louie," and perhaps setting a new record for largest guitar ensemble "It was the perfect rock 'n' roll song â€â€? especially to dance to â€â€? at that moment of time On the other hand, the state Legislature considered making it the official state rock song in the 1980s, but decided against it "Some of them were playing in the key of `R,'" Morrill said But that's OK And they apparently did not break the purported record set by a gathering of 1,324 guitar players in Toronto who played Bachman Turner Overdrive's "Taking Care of Business Mass Guitar Performance Staged in Wash Revere ran through the outfield, cheering on the guitars But nobody seemed to care "Louie Louie, we gotta go," bellowed Kent Morrill, 62, of the Wailers, the group credited with launching the rock version in 1961 "Anybody can play `Louie Louie,'" said Revere, 65 " Not the same thing at all "I liked playing guitar as hard as I could Once past the opening chords of the 1960s rock anthem â€â€? A, D and E-minor, played DAH DAH DAH, dah dah, DAH DAH DAH, dah dah â€â€? the thread of melody got lost " Shandle Wallace, 33, of Tacoma, didn't know "Louie Louie" and instead played "Wild Thing," another '60s classic featuring the same three chords " Organizer Jason Webb of Tacoma, who owns Fog City Productions, counted 754 guitarists, which he believes is the largest group to play "Louie Louie" â€â€? the previous record was reportedly about 20 â€â€? and the largest gathering to perform electronically on stringed instruments It was only the beginning," he said, adding that he hopes next year's event will draw 1,000 "Louie Louie" lovers Setting up took about three hours There were 62 microphones, 74 plug-ins, dozens of speakers, and hundreds of yards of cables and wires "That was awesome," said Evan Twedt, 13, of Bothell "It was fabulous " The Guiness Book of World Records doesn't have a guitar-ensemble entry â€â€? just a 1,013-cello performance of Bach's "Suite in D Major Paul Revere & the Raiders also had a 1963 hit with the song Proceeds will fund the program through the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound Participants paid $20 to play and hear the Wailers and Portland's Kingsmen, who recorded the biggest hit version of "Louie Louie" in 1963 Dangel is credited with helping to convert singer-songwriter Richard Berry's calypso tune about a lovesick sailor into a rock classic by transforming its three-chord intro and adding a fierce guitar solo "It was one of the most fun events in the Northwest in a long time," Webb said Hundreds of people with guitars turned out at Cheney Stadium â€â€? estimates range from 600-something to 754 â€â€? and had a great time at Sunday's 1,000 Guitars festival In nine minutes â€â€? or six or 12, depending on who was timing â€â€? it was over
