Fine staging and pacing by director Fred Schepisi go for nought amid the performance and plotting weaknesses Uneasy tolerance dictates relations among the Grombergs until family tragedy stirs confrontations and forces long-seething animosity to the surface â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Motion Picture Association of America rating definitions: G â€â€? General audiences The comic drama about a family's old, middle-aged and young males battered by life's big and little cruelties offers a few touching moments of pathos, a few amusing highpoints and a whole lot of eavesdropping on dreary domestic difficulties you'll likely find far less interesting than your own Some material may not be suitable for children PG â€â€? Parental guidance suggested Some material may be inappropriate for young children Exchanges with his character's new romantic interest (Michelle Monaghan) are so stiff and phony they come off as bad student scenes performed in acting class Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian Reliant on care from his wife, Evelyn (Diana Douglas), Mitchell manages to maintain a judgmental air of disapproval toward his son At the Movies: 'It Runs in the Family' Apr 24, 9:50 AM EST "It Runs in the Family" sounds like an intriguing opportunity to catch three generations of the Douglas clan on screen Their relationship is tested by Alex's temptations of a marital fling and by the shenanigans of their drug-peddling son Asher (Cameron Douglas), a college underachiever, and their bright, introverted 11-year-old Eli (Rory Culkin) The mix never musters much of a dynamic between Kirk Douglas and son Michael, leaving their first on-screen pairing little more than a novelty Jesse Wigutow's screenplay presents generally commonplace family strife blended with some forced melodrama and spiced by a quirky twist or two But his character is so significant, it requires real acting chops â€â€? not just the Douglas surname â€â€? to make it credible Mitchell is dealing with his mortality after a stroke (Kirk Douglas' speech remains impaired from a stroke he suffered in 1995) Kirk and Michael Douglas share a couple of decent father-son exchanges, while Kirk adds some sweetly sad moments of introspection on his own Two stars out of four A weak performance by Cameron Douglas, Michael's son, as the movie's younger-generation principal euthanizes a third of the story In truth, the movie just amounts to boredom in triplicate "It Runs in the Family" then lumbers into an implausible series of simultaneous turning points for all the Gromberg males before petering out with a dispassionate and unsatisfying finale All ages admitted But despite ample screen time, Bernadatte Peters is consigned to a one-note role as a shrill, suspicious wife The movie's focal point is Alex Gromberg (Michael Douglas, also a producer on the film), an attorney in the firm founded by his father, Mitchell (Kirk Douglas) Yet Alex would rather represent rent strikers in Harlem than the firm's corporate clients The only real advantage to gathering so many Douglases together, though, is that it made the movie's opening montage of family photos easier to compile R â€â€? Restricted Running time: 109 minutes "It Runs in the Family," an MGM release, is rated PG-13 for drug content, sexual material and language Alex has a sturdy but humdrum marriage to therapist Rebecca (Peters) Granted, it's Cameron Douglas' first screen role other than a bit part in an independent film The fourth Douglas in the film â€â€? Kirk's ex-wife and Michael's mother, Diana Douglas â€â€? has a gracious presence in her brief appearance PG-13 â€â€? Special parental guidance strongly suggested for children under 13 NC-17 â€â€? No one under 17 admitted
