Cellini's actual bronze statue of Perseus stands today in Florence's Piazza della Signoria 27, the family heads home
He's scheduled to open the 2006-07 Met season in a new generation's Three Tenors triple bill with Salvatore Licitra and Neil Shicoff, and has talked to La Scala in Milan about opening its 2006-07 season as Radames in Verdi's "Aida," a role he says is musically akin to a Bel Canto opera "
At times this year in Paris and New York, chronic back pain has flared up He plans to sing the alternate D-flat in the first-act trio He sings Don Jose for the first time starting Feb
"You need great stamina to sustain the role from beginning to end," Giordani said I could sing the heavy repertoire 10 years ago, but I decided, `Don't do it' because I saw many, many singers fall down choosing the heavy repertoire, make a huge amount of money in five years and then disappear "
Cellini, who was born in 1500 and died in 1571, was a sculptor, goldsmith and engraver "
"Cellini," an 1838 work being performed to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Berlioz's birth on Dec I think it's a great opportunity
The 40-year Italian tenor took on Arnold in Rossini's "Guillaume Tell" at the Paris Opera in March, then at the same theater in June sang Henri in Paris' first production since 1863 of the original French version of Verdi's "Les Vepres Siciliennes He was accused of sodomy "Cellini is a complete character The thing Berlioz didn't show in this piece is the exaggeration of his ego His children, 6-year-old Michele and 5-year-old Gerard Andre, are spending the fall at a Manhattan school that teaches in English and Italian " And just up ahead are his first performances of Don Jose in Bizet's "Carmen" and Enzo in Ponchielli's "La Gioconda He's a comic Some documents say that he was really also very mean, he was a terrible human being He really is Still, he's managed to push ahead "
"Cellini" didn't return to the Paris Opera until 1972 and wasn't given its American premiere until May 3, 1975, when Jon Vickers sang the title role as Sarah Caldwell conducted the Opera Company of Boston, a performance given in English, not French
"I think I'm pretty able to understand what is good for me to sing or not," Giordani said
His schedule is being booked into the 2007-08 season and includes Puccini's "Manon Lescaut" (Zurich and Berlin at the start of 2004-05), Verdi's "Il Trovatore" (Houston in January 2005) and Donizetti's "Poliuto" (Bilbao in March 2006)
After the run at the Met, which includes a national radio broadcast on Dec
"They love it," he said
The opera, which was making its Met premiere Thursday, has had a troubled history, with Berlioz revising it in both two- and three-act versions that were produced at Weimar in 1852
A preview of his arias from "Carmen" and "Trovatore" are available on his first solo recording, "Tenor Arias," which has released by Naxos this month He lives part of the year in Lucerne, Switzerland, the hometown of his wife, Wilma, and part of the year in Sicily, where he was born
11, 1803, requires more preparation than most operas, just because it is staged so rarely Then I put it away for a couple of months "
"A role like this needs a year to be ready," he said recently at a coffee shop not far from the Met "I'm in the business for almost 20 years He's a genius artist A planned production this season at the Lyric Opera of Chicago was scrapped And quite a scoundrel "You are the leader of the opera
To prepare for "Cellini," Giordani moved his entire family to his New York apartment, which he bought in 1994 "
A month later he sang Calaf in Puccini's "Turandot" for the first time at Torre del Lago in Italy "
The plot of "Cellini" deals with Pope Clement VII's commission of a statue of Perseus killing the Medusa, and of the preference of the pope's treasurer, Balducci, for another sculptor, Fieramosca He could also be a very romantic human being Now comes the title role in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Berlioz's "Benvenuto Cellini He was accused of killing people, stealing gold I was very honored and very moved when the Met and Jimmy Levine told me they wanted to do `Benvenuto Cellini' with Marcello Giordani "I like to start a year before just to do some historical research, listen to different CDs with different singers, different conductors After its Covent Garden premiere in 1853 in an Italian version, Queen Victoria panned the performance, writing in her diary: "We saw and heard produced one of the most absurd and unattractive operas I suppose anyone could have composed
"I can tell Cellini is the alter ego of Berlioz," Giordani said Berlioz put a lot of beautiful music to you Balducci's daughter, Teresa, loves Cellini but was promised by her father to Fieramosca 18 in Palermo, then takes on Enzo on April 20 at Carnegie Hall with the Opera Orchestra of New York, getting ready for performances at Covent Garden next September "
Giordani has a big, ringing top â€â€? he showed off glorious high C a year ago during performances of Bellini's "Il Pirata" at the Met "I think they're traveling better than me Tenor Giordani Tackles 'Benvenuto Cellini'

It's not that Marcello Giordani just seems to be singing a new role every other month
