â€â€? Scott Bauer, AP Writer â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Aerosmith, "Honkin' On Bobo" (Columbia) Listen to any Aerosmith song and the influence of the blues hits you so hard that it rings in your ears Although the record is lyrically compelling from beginning to end, it's wanting in the music department â€â€? Ron Harris, AP Writer â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Eric Clapton, "Me and Mr Sound Bites: Audio Reviews Selected audio reviews J-Kwon, "Hood Hop" (So So Def/Arista) Punishing beats, a strong hook and a voice with some serious street savvy has given 17-year-old J-Kwon a rap and pop hit with the white-hot single "Tipsy There's a clean crushing bass that provides the backbone for the tracks on "Hood Hop The only mystery is why it took so long for Clapton to do it Clapton puts 14 of them together in this collection that is aided by a standout backing band, including Billy Preston on keyboards and Jerry Portnoy on harmonica â€â€?Chelsea J " Perhaps the band's best effort is showcased on Big Joe Williams' "Baby, Please Don't Go," which is elevated from its typical head-nodding pace to frenetic romp With so many musical acts trying to be artsy these days (think Godsmack's unplugged album and Rod Stewart singing standards), Aerosmith managed to remember the music that inspired them and then make it their own â€â€? Angela Watercutter, AP Writer â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Bob Dylan, "Live 1964: Concert at Philharmonic Hall - The Bootleg Series Volume 6" (Sony) Given the iconic image of a young, cherubic-faced Bob Dylan standing alone on a stage with an acoustic guitar in hand and a harmonica strapped around his neck, it's hard to believe a live concert from that period of his career has never been released Now the band is dropping its rock pretenses with "Honkin' on Bobo," an album made up almost entirely of blues classics When you're writing to compete with the likes of Fred McDowell, who penned "Back Back Train" and "You Gotta Move" â€â€? songs also featured on the album â€â€? you have to be more than good, you have to be great Johnson" is a treat, both for fans of the blues and Clapton, who eschews anything related to pop and dives into perhaps his largest musical influence But make no mistake, this is not "Aerosmith Sings The Blues N On Bo Diddley's "Road Runner," for example, Perry kicks it up a notch with a wicked, in-your-face effort that nearly makes his guitar sound like it's singing Like many of his most famous live performances, this Halloween night show has been around for years in varying degrees of quality on bootlegs â€â€? Scott Bauer, AP Writer Johnson is known to have written only 29 songs during his brief, legendary career in the 1930s Many of the songs are recognizable, even to the few Clapton fans who may not be familiar with Johnson's work, including "Come On In My Kitchen" and "Kindhearted Woman Blues man describe a drive-by on cops in retaliation for the shootings of blacks by police He calls out for help, and after someone shouts the lyric, Dylan laughs and starts the song with nary another hitch "Live 1964: Concert at Philharmonic Hall - The Bootleg Series Volume 6" rectifies that hole in the official Dylan canon J-Kwon says he's bent on introducing the "'hood" to "pop," and he's like Nelly with a mean streak when he raps on "Parking Lot " However, the message could be lost in all the throw-your-guns-in-t he-air bravado, especially on tracks like "I Have A Dream Too" where MCs M-1 and stic The 12 tracks feature only one new Aerosmith song, "The Grind," which is perhaps the only downside of the album Tyler's rocked-out vocals nicely update Sonny Boy Williamson's "Eyesight To The Blind" and Willie Dixon's "I'm Ready Perhaps youth, like LL Cool J back in the day, is J-Kwon's best calling card He's talkative â€â€? even sounds a bit intoxicated â€â€? and is funny and at ease with the New York City crowd Louis upbringing, which he brings to life vividly throughout the album "Me and Mr While the music is top-notch, what pushes this concert over the top is Dylan's demeanor It convinced superproducer Jermaine Dupri to cultivate J-Kwon and stick him on his So So Def label, so who's to argue? The album is good, but "Tipsy" is hands-down the thickest rap song of this young year, as he smoothly whips together lyrics about being confident in a nightclub and swigging courtesy of a fake ID " Clapton is loose throughout and it's clear that he is enjoying the tip of his guitar to Johnson For fans of car door-rattling rap, J-Kwon's a winner O W " This is one of the world's most successful rock bands making the blues explosive Most of the songs are re-imagined Aerosmith style, with Steven Tyler's wailing, howling vocals and Joe Perry's screaming guitar slides " "I don't like to talk a lot, I got two words for you â€â€? parking lot " Evidently that's where scores got settled during J-Kwon's admittedly rough St Amid sex themes and gunplay, it's not exactly the stuff you'll want your high school sons and daughters listening to, but try and stop 'em Songs like "50 in the Clip" and "D Tambourine Man" and "It Ain't Me Babe One of the most endearing moments comes as Dylan begins the song "I Don't Believe You" but can't for the life of him recall the opening line And "The Grind" simply isn't great Dylan runs through such classics as "The Times They Are a Changing," "Mr Moments like that are precious and help vault "Live 1964" into the rarified air of a must-have from Dylan's expansive catalog Carter, AP National Writer â€â€?â€â€?â€â€? Dead Prez, "RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta" (Columbia) Dead Prez's new album is chock full of rapid-fire rhymes, bouncy-but-gritty beats and political poignancy " Built on the idea that the gang members of America should start banging for change, the record is the kind of offering that could serve as a bridge between fans of gangsta rap and those yearning for politically minded rhymes like the ones Public Enemy made famous ," use played-out beats " At show's end he is joined by Joan Baez for four songs Johnson" (Reprise) It's hard to go wrong with Eric Clapton doing an entire album of Robert Johnson covers But "RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta" may not live up to the hype and hopes of those who are eagerly awaiting a follow-up to the group's debut, 2000's "Let's Get Free " And there's still something a little raw about J-Kwon â€â€? a bit unpolished â€â€? that demands your attention The record gives fans of each of those styles one place to find both in tracks like "Walk Like a Warrior," the soulful "W-4" and "Hell Yeah," which throws down a dance beat and the call-to-arms, "If you claiming gangsta, then bang on the system " So is the rest of his debut album, "Hood Hop," worth a double-take? Oh yeah But despite its shortcomings, "RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta" is a solid record, and should have an audience in both gangstas and revolutionaries
