Italy threw its own version of a royal wedding Thursday as Emmanuel Filiberto, the grandson of Italy's last king, married French actress Clotilde Courau in the same Roman church where his great-grandparents wed
The Italian media has dubbed the ceremony the "wedding of the year," and the 90-minute nuptial service was carried live on the Sky 24 cable channel
She and the groom both got teary at times during the ceremony, which was celebrated by Cardinal Pio Laghi, a top Italian prelate and a former Vatican ambassador to the United States
The groom's great-grandparents, Victor Emmanuel III and Elena of Montenegro, were married in the same church
Courau was born near Paris but spent her childhood in Benin, where her father worked as an engineer
Emmanuel Filiberto is the son of Victor Emmanuel, who himself is the son of Italy's last king, Umberto II, and Marina Doria
Courau, dressed in white Valentino and holding a tumbling bouquet of pink roses that hid her belly, said her vows in French-accented Italian before leaning over to kiss Emmanuel Filiberto on both cheeks
