You will laugh until it hurts at this very funny fast-paced farce that ran for eight years in London and delighted Broadway audiences. A young bride who lives above a bank with her husband – the assistant bank manager – innocently sends a mail order off for some Scandinavian glassware. What comes is Scandinavian pornography. What to do with the veritable floods of pornography, photographs, books, films and eventually girls that threaten to engulf this happy couple? The matter is considerably complicated by the man's mother, his boss, a visiting bank inspector, a police superintendent and a muddled friend who does everything wrong in his reluctant efforts to set everything right, all of which works up to a hilarious ending of closed and slamming doors.
There are nine characters in the play, five men and four women. All of the ages cited in the character descriptions are “playing ages” and there is some flexibility in casting. This play is a lot of fun to do. It is a very, very funny fast-paced British farce, so all actors will need to have or learn an English accent. When reading from the script at auditions actors should make an attempt at a British accent, perfection is not expected or required – just give it a try!
