Prosecutors Jim Hardin and Freda Black argued that Peterson was anxious about the couple's mounting credit card debt, and may have killed his wife to collect on her insurance
Peterson was then handcuffed and led out of the courtroom C
Prosecutors said Peterson beat the 48-year-old woman to death to collect a $1
Peterson, 59, remained motionless as the verdict was read and each juror asked if he or she agreed with it
"The simplest explanation for the kinds of injuries Kathleen Peterson had and the kind that she didn't have is that she fell," Rudolf said " They said police never found a murder weapon, though such a blowpoke was missing from the house
The trial also featured extensive testimony about the 1985 death of Elizabeth Ratliff, a widowed friend of Peterson and his first wife when they lived in Germany His adopted daughters â€â€? who heard testimony about the similar death of their own mother in 1985 â€â€? held each other and sobbed, while his sons and other supporters sat in stunned silence
Jurors seemed unperturbed by conflicting testimony over a murder weapon It'll be all right
But, days before wrapping up their case, defense attorneys presented an undamaged blowpoke, covered with spiderwebs and dust, and said they found it in the basement
"We didn't even have a chipped finger nail They, along with Peterson's sons by his first marriage, Todd and Clayton, were among his staunchest defenders
Ratliff was also found dead at the bottom of a staircase, and her death was long blamed on a fall after she had suffered a stroke N
Peterson was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his second wife, Kathleen, in December 2001 4 million life insurance policy But an autopsy performed this year on her exhumed remains concluded she, like Kathleen Peterson, died after being beaten in the head Novelist Convicted in Death of Wife
Oct 10, 10:31 AM EST
Novelist and onetime mayoral candidate Michael Peterson was found guilty Friday of murdering his wife, whose body was found in a pool of blood at the bottom of a staircase in their home
His defense team said she must have fallen down a staircase in their home while her husband was outside by the pool, at the end of an evening spent celebrating the sale of movie rights to one of his books
They also called to the stand a male escort who testified about his e-mail correspondence with Peterson, trying to undermine the argument that the Petersons' five-year marriage was happy Prosecutors suggested Peterson used a lightweight metal fireplace tool, a "blowpoke
Peterson, whose novels include the 1990 "A Time of War" and its 1995 sequel, "A Bitter Peace," was automatically be sentenced to life in prison without parole
After the verdict was read, Peterson turned to his family with a pained smile, saying "I love you
The trial's spectators included her daughters, Margaret and Martha Ratliff, who were raised by Peterson after their mother's death " His attorney, David Rudolf, told Judge Orlando Hudson that they would appeal
During the trial, Rudolf insisted that Kathleen Peterson's injuries weren't consistent with a homicide, based on a comparison with state autopsy records of 257 killings since 1991
