The exhibit, titled "kid size: The Material World of Childhood," features 150 children's toys, items of furniture and artifacts that span three centuries and come from six continents There is an Italian swivel chair made during World War II that was intended to distract children while they received haircuts
There also are a number of African mats, sleeping bags and hammocks on show nearby They are displayed on uneven platforms that give the exhibit a roller coaster feel
After its run at the Wadsworth "kid size" will travel to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art from December through March 2005 and then to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh from April 2005 through September 2005 Big, neon-colored blocks fill empty spaces
The objects are broken into six themes: sleep, basic function, mobility, play, formal learning and seating A late 19th-century oak highchair made in Wales features an elaborate carving of an angel as a back and two standing lions as hand rests
A favorite for Holmes is an invention by the famous Eames brothers
"We wanted to make it feel light and playful," Holmes said
An electric-powered scooter from 2000, designed by Sharper Image USA, was also added and will be shown next to a 1950 kick scooter that features a wooden block over the back wheel for braking It was made by David Nicol for his son, David Bruce, whose name is carved on the footrest Exhibit Explores the World of Childhood

The baby cradles on display have only their purpose in common The design is bare â€â€? no mane or tail â€â€? and is made of only pine wood and iron The museum also obtained a "baby" blue Bugatti, a child's car designed by the same people who made Ettore Bugatti's famous Type 35 racing cars of the 1920s
This is the first time the exhibit â€â€? organized by the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany â€â€? is being shown in North America, said Thomas Denenberg, curator of American Decorative Arts at the Wadsworth Charles and Ray Eames designed a mechanical rocking horse that could walk forward when a child rocked his body from left to right One rare piece is a 1875 wooden bathtub that was built for children in China and was probably reserved for only wealthy families
Bathtubs, toilet chairs, playpens and car seats are also on display 1
While some pieces are as sensible as a 1990 German highchair that comes complete with safety belt and footrest, others were made with design and style in mind
Late 19th-century European school desks with lids that could be flipped open and used as chalkboards, as well as more contemporary models, such as the "Kin-der-link" furniture used in childcare centers and libraries, are part of the learning section of the exhibit
The Wadsworth added about 10 items to the show, including two shiny, classic Schwinn bicycles dating back to 1969 and 1970 that were given to the museum by a collector in Bloomfield
"This is a way to show how the same thing, made for the same purpose, can exist across cultures and across time," Willard Holmes, Wadsworth's director, said Blown-up photographs and videos of children playing are on the walls
It opened at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art on Thursday and runs through Aug
A collection of rocking horses range from the classic model with saddle, stirrups and a bushy tail to a more simple plastic version that comes with just a pair of handles
One is a wooden Biedermeier made in Germany around 1840, another was made by the Tsimshian tribe of the Pacific Northwest and a third is a 1996 collapsible cardboard crib made by Danish designer Ole Gjerlov Knudsen Like building blocks, the "Kin-der-link" stools can be linked in three ways to make different shapes
