SYNOPSIS
In the final stage of her cancer, Janet Bright is confronted by her mortality. For two years she has isolated herself, withdrawing from friends and family, shunning even those closest to her- specifically her daughter, Samantha. 20 years prior she was widowed as her late husband took everything from her: her youth and her love. After his funeral Janet, on the eve of shedding her motherhood, comforted Samantha. She used the snow globe resting on her bedside table to illustrate heaven and keep the memory of Carl alive. The next day Janet solicited help to run the household from a Spanish lady named Ilda. With responsibilities at home well managed, she was free to exercise whatever impulse donned her lonely heart.
The life of neglect bore its toll on little Samantha. Her security was quickly evicted a few month’s after her father passed away. Now twenty eight she has spent the last two years trying to reconnect with her mother, but to no avail. All she has left of her mother seems to be a distant memory of a snow globe. After Janet learns she’s losing the battle, she’s forced out of reclusion. The purpose of her isolation was to protect her daughter. As soon as she got better she was going to reconcile with her, but her cancer hastened their meeting. Janet’s hope for understanding wasn’t easily achieved; there was a lot she had to account for. But after explaining the circumstances, Samantha melted in her arms. Janet apologized and was a mom again. The next morning she left for the beach to watch the sunrise. It was a past-time she had neglected since Carl passed away.
“She is alone with the crisp New England air, the small waves breaking in the shallows, the plumes of clouds marching towards the shore, and the rested sun rising behind her. She walks resolved in her purpose to the water’s edge, feeling each grain of sand dance between her toes. The memory of a higher tide lies obscured beneath the dark sand. Her arch sinks deeper as she steps closer to the Sound. Swooooooosh...The cold water covers her toes and hides her ankles. She stops for a moment to reconsider, but life has left her no consideration. The water swells above her waste holding her heart in a cold embrace. Soon her blue eyes swim in a grey sea then SHHHHHHH...The ocean waves, the ocean mist, the cool breeze rolls off their lips. A pastel sky flush with excitement rises above the waterline.”
