"Everyone wanted to see what Al had wrought And with that, he earned the affection of those he drew " Mary Martin in mid-flight in "Peter Pan He absolutely danced It was like unwrapping a Daumier, and I think he will last as long as Daumier On June 23, two days after what would have been his 100th birthday, he will receive a rare accolade " "He did his interpretation of your performance Caricature King Al Hirschfeld Dies Jan 21, 9:56 AM EST NEW YORK (AP) -- From Merman to Madonna, from Burns (George) to Allen (Woody), show-biz caricaturist Al Hirschfeld captured the stars in his graceful, fluid pen-and-ink drawings "It was an honor to be drawn by him," said Bernadette Peters, herself the object of Hirschfeld's pen in such musicals as "Sunday in the Park with George," "Into the Woods" and, most recently, "Annie Get Your Gun " "They weren't vicious " It was in the drama pages of the Times where Hirschfeld published most of his theater work " â€â€?â€â€?â€â€?   "He caught my spirit, and I was very, very touched by it "There was tremendous art and wit in his work and underneath it all, his drawings had tremendous humanity," said Joel Grey, proud owner of two Hirschfelds, including one from "Cabaret In recent years, Hirschfeld became something of a growth industry "He was an absolute fixture â€â€? as much a part of the theater as actors," said Dorothy Loudon, an actress blessed with more than a half-dozen Hirschfelds He even was the subject of a documentary film "He was a dancer with a pen " Hirschfeld, an urbane man with snow-white hair and a Santa Claus beard, was a regular at Broadway opening nights for more than 50 years with his second wife, actress Dolly Haas, who died in 1994, and later with art historian Louise Kerz, whom he married two years later The Martin Beck Theatre on West 45th Street will be renamed for Hirschfeld He made them brilliant and provocative but without being destructive â€â€? and that's quite a feat She owns seven of them, including those for her two biggest Broadway hits, "Annie" and "Noises Off But it was his sketches of Broadway performers and their shows where his art found its deepest expression and its most devoted fans He did the portraits for a series of commemoratives honoring comedians such as Jack Benny, Laurel and Hardy and Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy and later for a series on silent film stars " Hirschfeld caught them all Added Peters: "It's going to be hard not seeing him on opening nights any more, coming down the aisle And not just because he mischievously hid the name of his daughter, Nina, in all his drawings â€â€? often more than once â€â€? forcing you to hunt to really find them He was the theater's artist of record, chronicling its hits and flops from Broadway's Golden Age in the 1930s into the 21st century And each time he drew you, it was different, capturing what you did on stage " And unlike some caricaturists, Hirschfeld's portraits were never nasty or mean-spirited From "Gypsy" to "Hello, Dolly!", from "Hairspray" to even "Dance of the Vampires," this season's most celebrated turkey, Hirschfeld immortalized them all with a few carefully chosen lines of ink All his drawings have incredible movement," said director and performer Tommy Tune, the subject of Hirschfeld's most recent drawing in The New York Times, in December " Robert Preston striding across the wide expanse of the Majestic Theatre as Professor Harold Hill in "The Music Man His drawings graced everything from magazine covers to postage stamps The event will be a celebration of his life and will feature Broadway performers under the direction of Jerry Zaks And who will take Hirschfeld's spot in the Times? "Al is irreplaceable," Gelb said " Hirschfeld, who died in his sleep Monday at the age of 99, was an original " A glowering Zero Mostel as Tevye the milkman in "Fiddler on the Roof He was part of our theater heritage Arthur Gelb, the newspaper's former managing editor, recalled receiving the drawings when he was in charge of cultural coverage "I would get the drawing and unwrap it and immediately it was like a magnet for reporters and editors," Gelb said
