Jessye Norman has signed on for "Margaret Garner," the collaboration of composer Richard Danielpour and Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison based on a famous fugitive slave story
She was found guilty of "destroying property" and returned to slavery
"I think it is extraordinary for MOT, for Danielpour and for Toni Morrison to have the participation of not only Denyce Graves but of someone of Jessye Norman's stature," Marc Scorca, president and chief executive officer of Opera America, a national service organization, told the Detroit Free Press for a Wednesday story
Michigan Opera Theatre and opera companies in Philadelphia and Cincinnati commissioned the work
"Margaret Garner" is based on Garner's flight from Kentucky to the free state of Ohio in 1856 motopera
It's scheduled to premiere at the Detroit Opera House in May 2005, with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves singing the title role org
" When slave-hunters tracked down Garner, her husband and children, she slit her baby daughter's throat as part of a thwarted attempt to kill the family to avert a return to slavery
The 58-year-old soprano will sing all five performances at the Detroit Opera House but won't appear in later productions The story also inspired Morrison's 1987 novel "Beloved
