“GYPSY” by Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim
The “Entertainment” of our 59th season concludes with our second musical, “Gypsy,” book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. “Gypsy” is the well-known story of the rise to stardom of the 20th Century's most famous strip tease performer, Gypsy Rose Lee. Meet Mdm. Rose, an aggressive stage mother and her obsession with making her children stars. Follow Rose and her daughters, June and Louise, in the trip across the United States during the 1920s when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. Rose concocts one bad children's act after another in attempt to make her youngest daughter June, a stage star. One day Rose's agent/boyfriend Herbie mistakenly books them into a burlesque house. A guest star stripper gets arrested and Rose pushes her older daughter Louise into doing a no strip tease routine and GYPSY ROSE LEE is born. Jule Styne's music and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics have become some of the most popular and most recognizable music to ever come out of Broadway: Let Me Entertain You, Some People, You’ll Never Get Away From Me, If Momma Was Married, All I Need Is The Girl, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, You Gotta Get a Gimmick, and Together Wherever We Go. 30+ people, including boys, girls, teenagers, and musicians are needed to “entertain” in our season Finale.
