Columbus to Perform 'Rings' Score Live
Mar 22, 2:19 PM EST
When Howard Shore accepted the task of composing 12 hours of music for the film versions of the beloved "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, he says he felt like Frodo carrying the ring to Mount Doom
"This thing was definitely on the block," Hart said "I'm always happy to have some football players in there Last week, Shore was in England recording additional music for extended scenes for the "Return of the King" DVD "
Shore conducted the work as part of the "Return of the King" premiere in December in New Zealand, where the movies were filmed, and last month in Montreal, in his native Canada "
The emotionally stirring work will attract new people to the symphony, said Sandra Mathias, artistic director of the Columbus Children's Choir For the stage, Shore structures the music in a more narrative format, looking to opera for inspiration
The live work features many of the score's vocal pieces, which Shore said represent the poems and songs peppering Tolkien's pages Tolkien's three novels "
In the film, the music is timed to action that jumps from the hobbits' arduous quest to destroy the evil ring of power to their companions' war against armies of evil orcs, trolls and wraiths
They're sung in languages Tolkien invented for men, elves, dwarves and the evil land of Mordor, but luckily the pronunciation is similar to Latin, she said
In a time of static classical music audiences, the orchestra committed to an expensive, complicated production involving 200 performers, including two choirs that must learn invented languages, a full orchestra and musicians playing Norwegian fiddle, Japanese drums, African flutes and clanking chains
"We're always on the prowl for new and interesting projects," said Dan Hart, symphony president and executive director "It seemed like a perfect opportunity to introduce the symphony to a whole different group of people com

Shore used a chorus of Maori men on the soundtrack to chant in dwarvish for scenes in cavernous mines Fans from Alaska, New York City and Paris are coming to Columbus for their cultural fix R
Future performances are scheduled in Antwerp, Belgium; London; Atlanta; Philadelphia; Seattle and Pittsburgh "
Walker, who read the books four times in junior high, said the movies and music captured them perfectly

By Monday, more than 5,500 tickets were sold out for the first performance and a Saturday show added in January, symphony spokeswoman Nancy Colvin said
"We had never seen such advance sales on a show," Hart said
"It's somewhat of a community educational event," Shore said by telephone from New York City
Die-hard worldwide "Rings" fans saved the expensive production from cancellation in Columbus as the symphony, amid layoffs, looked last fall to drop undersold events, Hart said c om
www Director Peter Jackson has often referred to the gamble producers and distributors took in financing a three-film shoot in the previously ill-regarded fantasy genre, with no tickets sold until two years of work had been done
"The piece is essentially also based in 19th century symphonic tradition," he said
"I hope we have some real good grunting basses," Shore said

www Even on its own, she said, "It's a lovely work to listen to Some songs are deliberately not in harmony, and some break into 12-part harmony instead of the traditional four, leaving about six singers to sing some parts
The project has taken some five years and still isn't finished Then he looked at sales of the $15-to-$65 tickets, which hit $3,000 "right off the bat" in August and continued at a steady clip as links to the performance were posted on Tolkien fan Web sites howardshore
premiere of the score as a live symphonic work in six movements, each corresponding to a "book" in J He arrives Wednesday in Columbus to work with two merged choirs from Otterbein College and the Columbus Children's Choir and to rehearse with the singers and full orchestra on Thursday
Some of the elvish songs gain a floating, ethereal quality through long passages of sustained notes at the highest and lowest ranges of the human voice, Walker said, "so it's vocally very demanding He's bringing one mezzo-soprano on tour for a solo, but hasn't imported the New Zealand tribe members His first Oscar was for the score of the first movie, "Fellowship of the Ring "
There are more than 50 leitmotifs, musical phrases associated with characters and ideas in the story, such as the pastoral tune evoking the hobbits' home in the Shire and the brassy industrial march in off-kilter beat for the evil wizard Saruman And that was before the third and final film, "Return of the King," hit theaters and swept its 11 Academy Award nominations, including best song and best score for Shore
"The book is so musical, you wanted to have some aspect of that writing in the film," Shore said S "In Montreal, I saw lots of 'Lord of the Rings' books around (at rehearsals)
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra accepted its own burden when it booked a live performance of the score nearly two years ago â€â€? before all the music was written
"I feel like I'm still discovering it," he said
"The difference is, with pop music and theater music (such as this), there's going to be a theme you're going to hum out the door," she said
It is the first time in the symphony's history that it sold out two nights of a show "You wanted to create a piece that was steeped in antiquity He's also still "shaping" and editing the concert work
The songs are beautiful and otherworldly â€â€? and a challenging teaching tool, said Gayle Walker, choral director at Otterbein in suburban Westerville "
Risk has been the production's hallmark
